Thousands of refugees are currently stranded at the Greek border at the mercy of European Council and European countries including; children, elderly, pregnant women and sick. Refugees are living in adverse conditions. While European Union leaders are in a deadlock with Turkey over refugee issue. An Amnesty International team visited the refugees facing adverse conditions at the northern Greek border crossing of Idomeni. Up to 13,000 people are stranded at this point alone, an Amnesty team revealed. Amnesty initiated a petition calling Tusk to take action under these four points.

  • Use all available means to urgently accept asylum-seekers from Greece – including relocating a large number of persons without applying restrictive selection criteria, easing family reunification and allowing asylum-seekers to obtain visas from member states’ representations in Greece for onward legal travel;
  • Support an effective relief programme to ease the pressure on Greece to respond to the humanitarian crisis;
  • End discriminatory border practices and support countries along the Western Balkans route, to ensure refugees and asylum sekeers can access asylum procedures and adequate reception conditions;
  • Open up more safe and legal routes for people in need of international protection to ensure refugees do not need to embark on dangerous sea crossings to reach protection in Europe.

Pregnant women and children are among the most suffered at Idomeni. “We sleep on the ground. Our blankets got wet yesterday night and it was really cold. We are only here because we were looking for safety for our children.” stated a pregnant woman.
