Srinagar: The Indian administered Kashmir remained cut-off from rest of the world for the fourth consecutive day on Monday as Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only road link connecting Kashmir with outside world remained closed.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir, and other parts of the region experienced moderate to heavy snowfall on Friday. Owing to snowfall, authorities closed 296-kms long Srinagar-Jammu highway for traffic. No traffic has been allowed on the highway since Friday and more than 800 vehicles including passenger vehicles are stranded in different places on the highway.
Srinagar-Jammu highway is the lifeline of Kashmir and all supplies and fuel are transported to the region from the highway. Whenever it gets blocked, the prices of essential commodities go up in Kashmir and same is happening at present.
A traffic police official said efforts are on to restore the traffic on the highway.
Meanwhile, Kashmir continues to be under the grip of intense cold. The snow has frozen and it is hampering free movement of people. Authorities have urged people not to drive fast and move cautiously.
According to a weather department official, Srinagar, which experienced coldest night of the season on Sunday, recorded a minimum temperature of – 4.2 celsius degrees last night.
The official said Qazigund and Kokernag in South Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of – 7.4 degrees Celsius followed by Pahalgam with – 6.8 degrees Celsius and Kupwara town with – 5.1 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, electricity supply that was snapped after the snowfall, has been restored in some areas. However, it has not been restored fully in most of the areas in Kashmir. The localities in Srinagar and other parts of the region are getting an hour-long power supply after every couple of hours.
The internet services have also not been fully restored. Several telecom companies including state owned BSNL have been unable to provide internet facility to its users after snowfall.
