Beating Ricky Ponting’s record of most catches in world cup (25 from 39 games) remains almost impossible because his closest follower Sanath Jayasuriya with 18 catches has been ignored by selectors for this world cup, while he will lead his team in the subcontinent. The next seven have all retired: Chris Cairns, Inzamam, Lara, Kumble, Steve Waugh, Aravinda and Hooper.
Collingwood is the only other player in the top ten who is playing this world cup. He has 12 catches from 14 matches and stands at number 10. Murali, part of Sri Lankan squad for this world cup, also has 12 catches, but he played 31 games.
Greame Smith, Styris and Sachin, with 10 catches each, also have chance to improve their tally and climb up the ladder. But they are unlikely to reach near Ponting.
