Washington: More than 49 million, or 16 percent of all Americans are living in poverty, more than at any other time in American history. according to numbers released Monday by the Census Bureau.
This recent number released Monday contrasts with an official poverty measure released in September which said 46.2 million people, or 15.1 percent, lived in poverty in the country, Reuters reported.
It includes people using various government benefits and expenses, such as food stamps, subsidized housing and home energy assistance.
More Americans use food stamps now than at any time in the 72 year history of the program which was started in 1939.
Those factors are not captured by the official poverty rate.
The official poverty rate is used to determine eligibility for public assistance and federal funding distribution.
