Milan: In a bizarre move, Milan, one of Italy’s most visited cities, is considering a ban on the sale of ice cream and pizza after midnight, aiming to reduce noise disturbances in its bustling streets.
The initiative, as explained by Deputy Mayor Marco Granelli, seeks to balance the vibrant social life of the city with the need for peace and quiet for its residents. The proposed restrictions would be enforced from May to November in popular nightlife areas including Nolo, Lazzaretto, Melzo, and several others.
This proposed ban is slated to take effect during the late hours on weekdays starting at 12:30 AM and extending to 1:30 AM on weekends, specifically targeting outdoor dining areas.
This controversial proposal comes nearly a decade after a similar attempt was made in 2013, which sparked significant backlash from both residents and local business owners, forcing then-Mayor Giuliano Pisapia to retract the proposed restrictions. Pisapia assured that there was no intent to ban nighttime sales of ice cream or any other food, admitting that the original directive may have been poorly phrased.
The city administration is currently soliciting feedback and suggestions from the public and businesses on this new proposal, with the consultation period open until early May.
This is not the first time an Italian locale has taken measures to manage the impacts of tourism and nightlife; last April, the quaint fishing village of Portofino implemented fines for loitering in popular photo spots to manage crowds and ensure safety.
