Beijing: Lenovo is eyeing to launch its Folder Pad tablet with multi-mode slate to challenge Microsoft’s Surface.
The purported Lenovo Folder Pad Tablet is designed to allow users to either hold it in their hands, or prop it up like a touchscreen monitor.
The name comes from the stand, which pops out like a flap case from behind. Connecting a wireless keyboard would allow users to enjoy the device like a desktop PC, while folding the kickstand flap would turn it into a tablet.
While Lenovo has yet to officially announce its new Folder Pad, a report from Liliputing claims that the device’s designers have submitted it to the IDSA and Red Dot organizations for consideration, apparently aiming to win some awards.
According to Liliputing points out, the Folder Pad hit the IDSA back in June 2013, which indicates that it’s been in the works for quite some time.
This means that it remains a mystery at this point just what screen size, resolution, processor, operating system, or other features the tablet may sport. It does seem, however, that the slate will come with stereo speakers, a wedge-shaped design, and a flat keyboard similar to Microsoft’s Surface Touch Cover.
The flat keyboard isn’t the only thing that seems to borrow design cues from the Surface, as the whole Folder Pad seems quite similar to Microsoft’s tablet, down to the built-in kickstand. One difference seems to consist of the intended use.
Microsoft’s Surface employs the keyboard for use in laptop mode, while Lenovo seems to be shooting for more of a desktop-like experience with its Folder Pad, since the keyboard sits on the table in front of the tablet, not attached to it.
Lenovo did not make any official announcement regarding its Folder Pad tablet so far, but the IDSA and Red Dot submissions suggest that it may hit the market soon enough. We’ll make sure to keep you up to date as soon as we hear more, so stay tuned.
