TEHRAN: At least 81 people have been killed and over 800 injured when several buildings collapsed in Iran after a strong 7.9-magnitude earthquake hit southeastern part of the country on Tuesday, unofficial sources said.
The epicentre of the quake, which struck at a depth of 18 kilometers (11 miles), was located about 81 kilometres north of Saravan in the southeastern province of Sistan Baluchistan, it said.
However, officials have confirmed the death of 40 people in Iran.
In December 2003, a big earthquake struck the southern city of Bam that killed 31,000 people – about a quarter of the population – and destroyed the city’s ancient mud-built citadel.
Correspondent from Karachi, Pakistan said that the quake was felt at 3:45pm and it created panic among the offices workers. “It was measured 5.4 on Richter scale in Karachi,” Asad Farooq, the correspondent, said.
Our correspondent from India, Iran also confirmed the quake.
At least five people have been reportedly dead and 35 others injured in Pakistan’s Pangor area around 1,000 houses collapsed in the country’s town of Mushkil near the border with Iran.
