Washington: United States (US) President Barack Obama on Monday telephoned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Mohammad Mursi, urging an end to the violence and killing in Gaza.
According to a White House readout issued on Monday, “In both calls, President Obama expressed regret for the loss of Israeli and Palestinian civilian lives.”
The calls came during Obama’s visit to Cambodia for an Asian economic conference.
“The two leaders discussed ways to de-escalate the situation in Gaza, and President Obama underscored the necessity of Hamas ending rocket fire into Israel. President Obama also offered condolences for the terrible loss of life in the recent train accident in Egypt,” the White House said regarding Obama’s call to Mursi.
“President Obama then called Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu of Israel, and received an update on the situation in Gaza and Israel.”
