Karachi: The price of local (desi) lemons in Karachi has surpassed the price of chicken meat.
Details indicate that with the onset of summer, the prices of various food items have skyrocketed, making lemons unaffordable for the public this season.
In the past week, the price of lemons has seen a significant increase, with lemons being sold at PKR 150 per quarter kilogram (250 grams) and PKR 600 per kilogram in Karachi markets and savings bazaars. Meanwhile, chicken meat is being sold at PKR 500 per kilogram in the markets.
During the summer season, Pakistani citizens traditionally use lemonade to combat the heat. However, due to the increased price of lemons, this remedy has become unaffordable. The prices of lemons have soared uncontrollably, depriving people of the luxury of lemonade to cool down in the heat especially when it’s needed the most as a heatwave is expected in most parts of the country, particularly in Punjab and Sindh, including Karachi from today until May 27.
Due to the indifference of the Karachi commissioner and the incompetent price control administration, the price of lemons has exceeded that of chicken, but the relevant authorities have yet to take action.
Residents of Karachi claim that due to the intense heat, the consumption of lemonade has increased, while the administration seems unable to control the soaring prices of lemons.
