Chennai: England strengthened its chances of reaching the quarterfinal stage of Cricket World Cup 2011 when they beat West Indies by 18 runs on Thursday in a Group B match at MA Chidambhram Stadium, Chennai.
England have played all their six matches and have seven points. All the other teams have one match remaining. Now there are two ways Bangladesh can reach quarterfinals: either they beat South Africa, which will give them eight points; or West Indies lose their last match against India with a net run rate lower than the Bengalis. At present both West Indies and Bangladesh have six points each.
Tredwell got four important wickets while Swann grabbed three as England bowled West Indies all out at 225. Part time bowler Ravi Bopara also took two wickets.
Chris Gayle and skipper Darren Sammy scored 43 and 41, respectively, very quickly at the top order to give West Indies a good run rate, but then wickets fell rapidly. And they were 118 for five in the 20th over. Ramnaresh Sarwan and Kieron Pollard then steadied the innings a bit with their 31 and 24 runs, respectively. When Pollard returned to make West Indies 150 for six, Russel came to score a quickfire 49 off just 46 balls with three sixes and two fours to push West Indies within sight of victory. But both Sarwan Russell departed 13 balls apart and West Indies then failed to recover. Russell fell on 222, Sarwan on 223, Roach on 223 and Benn on 225. England won.
Earlier, English captain Andrew Strauss won the toss and elected to bat first. They scored 243 runs. After getting a decent start of 48, England lost wickets at regular intervals and they were 151 for six in the 33rd over, but 44 from Luke Right, 20 from Bresnan and 22 extras helped them reach a fighting total. Trott remained the top scorer, however, with 47.
Tredwell was declared man of the match.
