Bangalore: The match between India and England e ended in a tie after some sensational movements at Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, Bangalore on Sunday.
Both sides scored 338 runs.
English skipper Andrew Strauss played a splendid inning of 158 runs off 145 balls with the help of one massive six and 18 fours. Together with Ian Bell he had pushed England within sight of victory at 281 for two when Zaheer Khan was reintroduced. Khan removed both batsmen on successive deliveries to put India in control.
Collingwood and Prior failed to make an impact and left soon. Michael Yardy and Tim Bresnan then pushed England forward, but an Indian victory seemed imminent. Munaf Patel got Yardy caught at fine leg in the 48th over, which brought Swann to the crease. In the 49th over by Piyush Chawla, first Swann hit a six over midwicket and then Bresnan cleared the rope at the same place.
England needed 14 off the last over. A six by Ajmal Shehzad of the third ball of the over silenced a roaring Indian crowd. England required five of the last three balls. They managed four, which meant the two sides share a point each from the match.
Munaf Patel and Piyush Chawla grabbed two wickets each while Harbajhhan got one.
Earlier, Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first. Little master Sachin Tendulkar smashed 120 runs off 115 balls with the help of five big sixes and 10 fours. He was dismissed by James Anderson in the 38th over. This was his 47th ODI, 98th international and fifth World Cup century. Yuvraj and Ghambir contributed 58 and 51 runs, respectively.
India made one change from the team that beat fellow co-hosts Bangladesh by 87 runs in Dhaka, bringing in leg-spinner Piyush Chawla for wayward fast bowler Sreesanth.
England made two switches from the side that scraped a six-wicket win over the Netherlands after fast bowler Stuart Broad was ruled out with illness, bringing in fellow seamer Ajmal Shahzad. They also dropped all-rounder Ravi Bopara and, like India, opted for a second spinner in left-armer Michael Yardy on a pitch expected to take turn.
This match had originally been scheduled for Kolkata but was switched to Bangalore after International Cricket Council officials said work still needed to be done on the Eden Gardens Kolkata ground to make it tournament ready.
This was the fourth tie in the cricket world cup history.
Andrew Strauss was declared man of the match.
