London: Universities across Great Britain fear losing out millions of pounds they get from international if immigration policies are not changed.
“Any crackdown could lead to foreign students going elsewhere, costing the economy billions,” warn 68 chancellors, governors and university presidents in rare letter to Prime Minister David Cameron.
It echoes warnings from Professor Eric Thomas, vice-chancellor of Bristol University, who earlier this month warned that recent visa changes – which include a ban on international students bringing dependants – could deter applicants, reports Daily Mail.
“We should class international students as temporary rather than permanent migrants,” Eric further advised to Mr Cameron.
The letter says Britain attracts around one in ten foreign applicants, generating around £8billion a year in tuition fees.
“Every university could lose up to £ 7 million a year in fees if the universities face a decrease in international.”
Former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell, chancellor of St Andrews University, as well as broadcaster Lord Melvyn Bragg, chancellor of Leeds University signatures are included in the letter.
