Sindh Govt. Warns K-Electric of Murder Charges Over Heat-Related Deaths in Karachi

Karachi: The Sindh government has issued a stern warning to K-Electric (KE), Karachi’s primary electricity supplier, threatening to file murder cases against its officials if recent fatalities are found to be linked to prolonged power outages.

According to a report, Provincial Minister Zia ul Hassan Lanjar expressed regret over the deaths of citizens in Karachi due to the heat in recent days. According to a spokesperson, the Sindh Minister of Interior noted that an inquiry into the incidents is underway, investigating a large number of civilian deaths.

Sindh Home Minister Zia ul Hasan Lanjar expressed condolences over the deaths reported in Karachi and announced that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of these fatalities. He stated that if the inquiry proves that the major cause of deaths during the heatwave was due to electric load shedding, then responsibility will be attributed to K-Electric. Additionally, cases of murder will be filed against executives and other responsible officials.

The warning follows a recent surge in deaths in Karachi, with the toll reaching 22 as reported by the Chhipa Welfare Association. The city has been experiencing extreme weather conditions, with temperatures soaring up to 42°C and the heat index surpassing 51°C earlier this week, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The sweltering heatwave has intensified due to prolonged power cuts lasting between 12 to 14 hours in various areas, exacerbating the plight of Karachi residents.
