Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi’s Funeral Prayer Attended by Thousands

Tehran: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led prayers on Wednesday at a memorial ceremony for the late President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian, who tragically died in a helicopter crash. The solemn event took place at the University of Tehran, drawing tens of thousands of mourners who later participated in a procession from Enghelab (Revolution) Square to Azadi (Freedom) Square.

Addressing the crowd, Khamenei paid tribute to Raisi, who was 63 years old. The caskets of Raisi and the seven others who perished in the crash, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, were draped in Iranian flags and adorned with their photographs.

President Ibrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian, and other individuals who lost their lives in the incident had thousands of participants in their funeral prayers, including leaders from several countries.

According to Iranian media, more than 40 high-level foreign delegations participated in the funeral prayer. Dignitaries from around the world attended the memorial, including Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, Turkey’s vice president and foreign minister, the deputy prime minister of India, the head of the Russian Duma, the Iraqi prime minister, and representatives from the Taliban. Haniyeh expressed his condolences on behalf of the Palestinian people and the resistance factions of Gaza, recalling his recent meeting with Raisi during Ramadan, where the late president emphasized that Palestine was the key issue of the Muslim world.

Following the memorial in Tehran, Raisi’s body will be transported to his hometown of Mashhad in northeastern Iran. There, he will be buried after funeral rites at the Imam Ali Reza Shrine in his ancestral city of Mashhad. The remains of the other crash victims will also be sent to their respective hometowns for burial.

Khamenei has declared five days of national mourning in honor of Raisi and his entourage. The memorial events commenced on Tuesday in the cities of Tabriz and Qom, with the nation collectively grieving the loss of its president and other esteemed officials.
