Islamabad: Tragedy struck late Sunday night when a car rammed into a pro-Palestine protest encampment near the Pakistani parliament in Islamabad, killing two protesters and injuring two others.
Islamabad police confirmed the incident, which occurred when a driver sped through the encampment, injuring multiple individuals. One protester died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries on Monday.
The police have apprehended the driver and impounded the vehicle involved in the incident. Legal proceedings are currently underway. According to initial reports, the accident occurred due to barbed wires getting entangled in the car’s tires.
The “Save the Gaza Movement” had set up the camp to demonstrate against Israel’s ongoing assault on Palestinians in Gaza.
The protest was organized by supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), a prominent religiopolitical party in Pakistan. Following the incident, dozens of JI members gathered outside the Islamabad police chief’s office, condemning the event as a “planned act.” The deceased protesters were identified as activists of JI.
A funeral for one of the deceased was held at the protest site on Monday, and JI has announced additional protests to be held in the evening. The protest camp, led by former Senator and JI leader Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, has been stationed near the parliament building to voice opposition to Israel’s offensive on Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of 35,456 people and injuring 79,476 since October 7 of last year.
