Kenya: Flash Floods Leave At Least 45 People Dead and Injure Several Others

Nakuru: In a devastating incident on Monday in Kenya, at least 45 people lost their lives and several people went missing as flash floods and a landslide ravaged western Kenya, sweeping away homes and vehicles.

The catastrophe was initially attributed to the collapse of the Old Kijabe Dam in the Mai Mahiu area of the Great Rift Valley, a region known for its susceptibility to flash floods. However, Nakuru County later clarified that the disaster was triggered by a clogged railway tunnel, which led to the sudden release of a massive volume of water.

The police commander of the affected area, Naivasha, Stephen Kirui, reported that large-scale relief operations are ongoing around 60 kilometers north of Nairobi in the Mai Mahiu area, where several bodies have been recovered from the debris.

So far 49 bodies have been extracted, but many more are believed to be buried under the rubble and over 100 people have been injured, while numerous vehicles are also submerged in water.

The relentless rains in Kenya have been wreaking havoc across the country, with the Meteorology Department issuing warnings of more expected rainfall. The Kenyan government’s spokesperson revealed that since mid-March, flooding has claimed the lives of at least 169 people, underscoring the urgent need for effective disaster preparedness and response mechanisms in flood-prone regions.

In Kenya more than 130,000 people have been displaced due to the floods and schools have been closed until further notice.
