Vice President Mohammad Mokhber to Assume Duties as President of Iran Following Ebrahim Raisi’s Death

Tehran: Following the confirmation of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s death in a helicopter crash by Iranian officials, Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will assume the responsibilities of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

According to the Iranian constitution, presidential elections must be held within 50 days following the death of a president. Article 131 of the Iranian constitution states that if a president is declared incapacitated or passes away during their term, the vice president assumes power after the Supreme Leader approves it.

Subsequently, a council comprising the vice president, the speaker of parliament, and the head of the judiciary is responsible for conducting elections to elect a new president within 50 days. With Ebrahim Raisi’s death in the helicopter crash, the crucial presidential post has become vacant. As per the constitution, Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will now take on the presidential duties.

Ebrahim Raisi had appointed Mohammad Mokhber as his first vice president immediately after assuming power in August 2021. Raisi was elected president in 2021, with the next scheduled presidential election set for 2025. It is noteworthy that 68-year-old Mohammad Mokhber, like Ebrahim Raisi, is considered a close associate of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Upon taking office, Raisi appointed Mokhber as his first vice president in August 2021. Mohammad Mokhber was part of the Iranian delegation that visited Moscow in October 2023 and agreed to supply missiles and more drones to the Russian military.

This delegation included two senior officials from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and a representative from the Supreme National Security Council. Mohammad Mokhber previously headed Setad, the Supreme Leader’s investment fund. In 2013, the U.S. Treasury Department included Setad and its 37 affiliated companies in the sanctions list.
