Islamabad: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has directed the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) application for Palestine to attain full membership in the global body to its membership committee, marking a pivotal step in the ongoing diplomatic efforts for Palestinian statehood.
The decision, announced by Malta’s UN ambassador Vanessa Frazier, who presides over the Security Council for April, signifies a crucial development in Palestine’s quest for international recognition. The 15-member committee is set to deliberate on Palestine’s status within this month, with a proposal for a meeting scheduled on Monday to address the application.
Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour expressed hope that the Security Council would uphold the global consensus on the two-state solution by granting full membership to the state of Palestine, emphasizing the PA’s sincere commitment to this cause after 12 years as an observer state at the UN.
Last week, the PA formally requested the Security Council to reconsider its 2011 application for full UN membership, a move that has gained momentum despite previous setbacks.
Security Council approval necessitates at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes by the permanent members, including the United States, Russia, China, France, or Britain. Despite Israel’s staunch opposition, Mansour expressed optimism that a decision would be reached during an upcoming ministerial meeting on the Middle East scheduled for April 18.
Israel’s UN ambassador, Gilad Erdan, denounced the prospect of Palestinian statehood, asserting it as a threat to Israel’s national security and lamenting the UN’s alleged interference in the peace process. However, Mansour’s persistence and the growing international support signal a watershed moment in Palestine’s diplomatic journey toward achieving full UN membership.
