U.S. Submits Draft UN Resolution for Immediate Gaza Ceasefire, Tied to Hostage Release

Washington: The United States has put forth a draft resolution to the UN Security Council, urging an “immediate ceasefire” linked to the release of hostages held by Hamas. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed this initiative during discussions with Saudi media, expressing hope for international support.

The development comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hamas, with mounting pressure on both sides to negotiate a deal for the release of hostages and the initiation of a truce in Gaza. According to reports, over 30,000 Palestinians have lost their lives in the conflict.

During his visit to Saudi Arabia, Blinken emphasized the importance of prioritizing civilian safety amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hamas. The proposed resolution seeks to underscore this priority by calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities, contingent upon the release of hostages.

Responding to questions about U.S. support for Israel, Blinken defended the proposed resolution, emphasizing that it prioritizes civilian safety and humanitarian assistance. He reiterated the U.S.’s commitment to Israel’s right to defend itself while underscoring the importance of protecting civilians caught in the conflict.

While the draft resolution awaits consideration by the UN Security Council, efforts to broker a ceasefire continue in parallel. Negotiations in Qatar aim to secure a temporary halt to hostilities, facilitating the exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners and the delivery of vital relief supplies. Despite challenges in reaching a consensus.

It is worth noting that the U.S. has a history of shielding Israel from UN actions and has previously vetoed three Security Council resolutions since the war commenced on October 7, the last one being the resolution drafted by Algeria urging an “immediate” humanitarian ceasefire, r Additionally, it urged the prompt and unconditional release of all hostages.

During the past 24 hours, over 100 Palestinians have been martyred in the relentless attacks by the occupying Zionist forces across Gaza. The Palestinian Ministry of Health has confirmed that the total number of martyrs due to Israeli attacks since October 7 has now reached 31,988 and 74,188 injured.

It remains evident that the genocidal attacks of the Israeli forces on Gaza continue. The UN reports that 85% of Gaza’s population has been displaced internally, with critical shortages of food, water, and medicine, while 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed.

Israel faces accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice, with an interim ruling in January ordering Tel Aviv to cease genocidal acts and ensure the provision of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza, which so far has gone unheeded as relentless Israeli attacks on Gaza claim the lives of hundreds of Palestinians daily.
