Over 10 Thousand Traffic Challans Worth Rs. 10 Million Collected Daily from Karachi Citizens

Karachi: The number of daily traffic challans collected from the citizens of Karachi has exceeded 10,000, with approximately 10 millions rupees being collected from citizens daily.

On Karachi’s roads and intersections, 8 to 10 traffic police officers and officials are visible, stopping vehicles and motorcycles, issuing fines by citing various violations of the law.

Fines worth hundreds of thousands of rupees are further exacerbating the difficulties of the public already distressed by inflation. There are 90 traffic sections in Karachi, with traffic police claiming that each section officer is given a daily target of collecting more than 25 fines.

Citizens complain that some officers intimidate them with hefty fines and then demand bribes ranging from a few hundred to several thousand rupees. They allegedly show a blank slip and warn that if anyone asks or tries to stop them, they’ll produce the slip to avoid any trouble. In the outskirts of New Karachi, policemen stamp a date on a special token, called a “token”, which remains valid for one to two weeks, charging anywhere from 150 to 3,000 rupees for each token.

On the other hand, the Deputy Inspector General of Traffic states that there has been an increase in fines due to violations of traffic laws. Citizens drive without licenses and indulge in reckless driving, causing an increase in fines.

He emphasized that improving public transport infrastructure is essential to solve traffic congestion issues.

Analysts suggest that enforcement against traffic law violations is necessary, but the fine amount should not be excessive.
