International Day To Combat Islamophobia to be Observed Today

Islamabad: The International Day To Combat Islamophobia will be observed today to raise awareness about Islamophobia.

Under the auspices of the United Nations, March 15 is observed as the International Day To Combat Islamophobia, aimed at raising voices against anti-Islamic propaganda and raising awareness worldwide.

Islamophobia, defined as the fear, prejudice, and hatred directed towards Muslims, manifests in various forms, including online harassment, verbal abuse, and physical intimidation. Rooted in institutional, ideological, and religious biases, Islamophobia perpetuates structural and cultural racism, targeting individuals based on perceived Muslim identities.

In response to the alarming trend of rising hate speech, the UN launched the Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech in 2019. However, hate speech and violence persist both online and offline, necessitating robust measures to safeguard religious freedom and promote mutual respect.

The United Nations General Assembly, sponsored by 60 Member-States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, designated March 15th as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, advocating for a global dialogue on tolerance and peace.

On this day, special ceremonies, seminars, and conferences are held worldwide to raise awareness against Islamophobia, hate speech against Islam, and disrespect towards sacred personalities, alongside condemning hate incidents.
