Moscow: A Russian plane, carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war, crashed, resulting in the death of all 74 individuals onboard.
According to international news agencies, the Russian aircraft, transporting 65 Ukrainians to Belgorod for a prisoner swap, crashed, and a fire broke out in it. The Russian military transport plane was completely destroyed in flames before any assistance could reach it.
The plane was carrying 65 Ukrainian war prisoners, who were being brought for exchange with Russian prisoners. Additionally, there were 6 members of the crew and 3 Russian soldiers on board. Unfortunately, all individuals lost their lives in the incident. Video footage shows the plane rapidly descending vertically and crashing onto the ground in a residential area.
Russia has accused Ukraine for the incident, stating that the passenger plane carrying prisoners of war was shot down by the Ukrainian military. Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister termed it as a ‘terrorist attack.
“The plane was destroyed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces from the area of Liptsy, Kharkiv region, using an anti-aircraft missile system. The Radar equipment of the Russian Aerospace Forces recorded the launch of two Ukrainian missiles.” said the Russian Foreign Ministry in a statement.
Earlier the Ukrainian news outlet, Ukrainskaya Pravdato, reported that Ukrainian defense forces shot down the Russian plane because it was carrying missiles for the S-300 ground-to-air defense system. The news outlet has now withdrawn its statement. No official confirmation or denial of the Russian accusation has come from Ukraine yet.
