Daily Death Rate in Gaza Surpasses All Major Conflicts in 21st Century: Oxfam

Islamabad: Oxfam reports that Israel’s military is causing an alarming daily death toll of 250 Palestinians in Gaza, surpassing the rates observed in recent major conflicts. The humanitarian organization calls for urgent international intervention to address the escalating crisis, emphasizing the heightened risk of famine, disease, and cold facing the population.

According to a report by Oxfam dated 11th January, Israel’s military is inflicting an average daily death toll of 250 Palestinians in Gaza, marking an unprecedented and deeply troubling escalation of hostilities. This staggering rate, surpassing any recent major conflict, including Syria, Sudan, Iraq, Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Yemen, has raised urgent concerns about the deteriorating humanitarian situation.

Sally Abi Khalil, Oxfam’s Middle East Director, expressed shock at the scale of atrocities, stating, “For 100 days, the people of Gaza have endured a living hell. Nowhere is safe, and the entire population is at risk of famine.” Oxfam calculated the daily death rate using publicly available data, highlighting the severity of the crisis compared to other conflict zones.

The aid agency warns that constant bombardment is forcing people into smaller, insecure areas, with over one million, more than half the population, seeking shelter in Rafah on the Egyptian border. Oxfam staff in Rafah report massive overcrowding, scarce food and water, and depleted essential medicines. Israel’s restrictions on aid entry, closed borders, and imposed siege compound the crisis, allowing only 10 percent of the weekly food aid needed to reach the affected population.

Oxfam also highlights the looming threats beyond direct casualties, such as hunger, disease, and cold. The onset of cold weather exacerbates the critical situation, with shortages of blankets, no fuel for heating, and no hot water. The lack of proper shelters is putting lives at risk, and cases of diarrhea have surged, posing a significant health threat. The World Food Programme, UNICEF, and World Health Organization (WHO) have demanded urgent action to prevent famine.

Sally Abi Khalil emphasizes, “While the mass atrocities continue, lives continue to be lost, and critical supplies cannot get in. Israel’s total blockade of the Gaza Strip is restricting life-saving aid, including food, medical supplies, and water and sanitation facilities.”

It is noteworthy that since the beginning of Israeli aggression in Gaza on October 7, the Israeli attacks have resulted in the deaths of nearly 24,100, including over 10,400 children and 7,100 women, and 60,834 Palestinians have been injured severely, and more than 8,000 Palestinians have been missing under the rubble since October 7, presumably dead. According to UNICEF,  more than 10 children a day lose one or both legs in Gaza due to Israeli attacks.

According to media reports, within the past 24 hours, Israeli forces have martyred 132 Palestinians and wounded 265 others.

Since October 7, Israel has carried out more than 600 attacks on hospitals and medical infrastructure, killing 620 people within the healthcare facilities of whom 610  were in Gaza and 7 in the West Bank, and has left 337 health workers dead. Israel has also consistently and systematically attacked media workers, killing at least 117 journalists since its war in Gaza.

Furthermore, 60-70% of infrastructure in Gaza has been either completely destroyed or damaged in Israeli attacks. According to the United Nations, relentless Israeli attacks in Gaza have led to the largest displacement of Palestinians since 1948, leaving over 2 million people, or 85% population of the Gaza Strip, displaced out of its total population of 2.3 million. The UN’s Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths has said that “Gaza has simply become uninhabitable”.

Meanwhile, in the Occupied West Bank, at least 352 Palestinians have been killed by Israel including more than 84 children while over 4,000 have been injured. In the Occupied West Bank since October 7 Israel has detained 5,822 Palestinians including 190 women and 335 children.
