Ramallah: UNICEF, the United Nations organization for children, reports that more than 10 children per day, on average, have lost one or both of their legs in Gaza in relentless Israeli attacks over the past three months since the beginning of Israeli aggression in Gaza. UNICEF notes that since October 7, the number has surpassed 1,000 children who underwent amputations, a dire consequence of the brutal Israel attacks.
According to details, the healthcare system in Gaza is on the brink of collapse, with severe shortages of doctors, nurses, and critical medical supplies like anaesthesia and antibiotics, as highlighted by the World Health Organization (WHO). Disturbingly, many operations on children have been conducted without anaesthetic due to these shortages.
Gaza’s hospitals, already strained, are operating at a fraction of their capacity, relying on sporadic access to fuel and basic medical supplies. The nine partially functional hospitals in the south face critical shortages, operating three times over capacity. Moreover, only 30% of Gaza’s pre-conflict medics are currently working, exacerbating the healthcare crisis.
Jason Lee, Save the Children’s Country Director for the occupied Palestinian territory, expressed profound concern over the situation: “The suffering of children in this conflict is unimaginable and even more so because it is unnecessary and completely avoidable. This suffering, the killing and maiming of children, is condemned as a grave violation against children, and perpetrators must be held to account.”
It is worth noting that as a a result of barbaric Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7, more than 23,000 Palestinians have been martyred including 10,000 children and 7,000 women, while 58,416 Palestinians have been injured.
