Due to Israeli Attacks Gaza has Become “Uninhabitable”: United Nations

New York: The United Nations’ Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths said due to relentless Israeli bombardment and attacks, Gaza has become “uninhabitable”, while highlighting the dire conditions, public health disaster, and the immediate need end the Israeli aggression in Gaza

Martin Griffiths, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, in a statement has urgently called for an immediate end to the ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza, emphasizing the unprecedented humanitarian crisis that has unfolded over the past three months since the October 7.

Griffiths in his statement said Gaza has now become a place of death and despair, with tens of thousands, mainly women and children, killed or injured. Families are forced to sleep in the open amidst plummeting temperatures, and areas designated for civilian safety have come under bombardment. Medical facilities, already scarce, are under relentless attack, leaving the few partially functional hospitals overwhelmed with trauma cases and critically short of supplies.

“Gaza has simply become uninhabitable. Its people are witnessing daily threats to their very existence – while the world watches on.”

“For children in particular, the past 12 weeks have been traumatic: No food. No water. No school. Nothing but the terrifying sounds of war, day in and day out.”, he said

He stressed that a public health disaster is unfolding in Gaza, with infectious diseases spreading in overcrowded shelters and a daily struggle for survival. The situation is dire for Palestinian women giving birth, with 180 doing so daily amid chaos and uncertainty. The overall food insecurity has reached unprecedented levels, and famine looms ominously.

Griffiths highlighted the impossible mission faced by the humanitarian community, trying to support over 2 million people amid staff casualties in Israeli attacks, communication blackouts, damaged infrastructure, and a scarcity of vital supplies.

“We continue to demand an immediate end to the war, not just for the people of Gaza and its threatened neighbors, but for the generations to come who will never forget these 90 days of hell and of assaults on the most basic precepts of humanity.”, Griffiths said.

The Under-Secretary-General appealed to the international community to use its influence to bring about a ceasefire, stressing that this war should never have started and it is long past time for it to end.
