Russia and Ukraine Carry Out Biggest Prisoner Exchange

Moscow, Kyiv: An exchange of prisoners with the mediation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken place between Russia and Ukraine, in which, under formal agreements, hundreds of prisoners of war have been released.

According to international news agencies, authorities on both sides have announced that over 200 soldiers from each country have been released. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the release of more than 200 Ukrainian soldiers and civilians from Russian captivity in a statement on Telegram. He also shared a video in this regard.

Dmytro Lubinets, the Human Rights Ombudsman for Ukraine, stated that a total of 230 Ukrainians, including 224 soldiers and 6 civilians, have been released from Russian captivity in exchange for Russian prisoners of war under Ukraine’s captivity.

On the other hand, the Russian Ministry of Defense has also confirmed the return of 248 Russian prisoners of war from Ukraine, marking a result of intricate negotiations facilitated by humanitarian mediation from the UAE.

This marks the 49th round of exchanges between the captured individuals of both nations. While prisoner exchanges have occurred periodically during the 22-month-long war, they have become less frequent, with the last swap taking place in early August. The exact numbers of prisoners of war on both sides remain unknown, although more than 4,000 Ukrainian service personnel are believed to be in captivity in Russia.
