Educational Institutions Not Immune to Drug Menace, says Health Minister Dr. Saad Khalid Niaz

Karachi: Dr. Saad Khalid Niaz, the caretaker Health Minister of Sindh, has expressed concern over the rapidly increasing use of drugs in Pakistan. He stated that it is distressing that our educational institutions are not immune to this social evil.

Speaking at a national conference on the spread and treatment of substance abuse under the Institute of Clinical Psychology at the University of Karachi, titled “Substance Use Prevention and Treatment: Bridging the Gap Between Research and Practice” (ICP-NCSUPT-2023), the caretaker Health Minister of Sindh highlighted that now narcotic substances are being sold and used in educational institutions on a considerable scale.

Dr. Saad Khalid Niaz emphasized the significant challenge of curbing the drug supply chain, attributing it to widespread smuggling and distribution. Dr. Niaz brought attention to the alarming revelation that drugs were finding their way into educational institutions through staff members, prompting authorities to take decisive actions against those involved.

Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Afridi, another speaker at the conference shared his valuable insights into the co-morbidity of psychiatric disorders among drug addicts and advocated for a multi-disciplinary approach to address the complex issue.

Professor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, stated that ice, charas, and sheesha have become common, posing a threat to the future of the new generation. Measures are being taken to curb the availability of drugs in educational institutions.

According to a survey, individuals aged between 20 and 35 years are most affected by drug addiction in Pakistan. Efforts are underway to raise awareness among students and the general public about drug treatment.

During the conference 21 research articles and papers were presented, offering a comprehensive overview of the challenges posed by substance abuse on campuses and the critical need for preventive and treatment measures.
