New Delhi: Modi’s right-wing Hindutva, ultra-nationalist party, BJP’s anti-Muslim policies continue, this time targeting Madrassahs in India, has converted more than a thousand Madrassas into English model schools.
According to international media reports, in the Indian state of Assam, a total of 1,281 Madrassas have been transformed into English model schools. The Hindutva extremist BJP government asserts that religious education cannot be funded with government money.
A directive issued from the office of the Director of Elementary Education in Assam imposes restrictions on all government and government-aided schools. Madrassas are instructed to be immediately converted into Medium English schools.
The state education minister Ranoj Pegu wrote on the social media platform ‘X’:
“Consequent to conversion of all government and provincialised madrassas into general schools under SEBA, @SchoolEdnAssam has changed the names of 1281 ME madrassas into ME School by a notification today,” on Wednesday.
BJP’s plan of closing down all government and provincialized madrasas initiated in 2021 after it passed a law to repeal two Acts related to madrasa education – one enacted in 1995 and the other in 2018.
The new legislation facilitating the conversion of Madrassas into Medium English schools took effect on April 1, 2022.
It is worth noting that Madrassa education was integrated into the Assam Education Curriculum in 1934, with the establishment of the State Madrasa Board in the same year.
