New York: The United Nations has rejected Afghanistan’s request for a permanent representative seat for the third time.
The committee, meeting in New York, cited the lack of international recognition for the Taliban government as the reason for the rejection.
The 9-member UN Credentials Committee, while rejecting the request for a permanent representative seat, stated that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan should first gain recognition from the international community.
The UN emphasized that the Taliban must fulfill commitments on women’s rights, adhere to international obligations for recognition, and form an inclusive government.
It should be noted that after the Taliban took control in August 2021, their spokesperson, Suhail Shaheen, was nominated as a permanent representative to the United Nations.
