Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia has imposed a ban on all Israeli-flagged cargo ships, specifically singling out ZIM, Israel’s largest shipping company, from docking at its ports, announced Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, in a statement on Wednesday, declared the maritime ban, asserting that it is a direct reaction to Israel’s actions that contravene international law and humanitarian principles, referring to the ongoing “massacre and brutality against Palestinians.”
The ban extends to ships en route to Israel, which will be prohibited from loading cargo at any Malaysian port with immediate effect. Anwar emphasized that Malaysia will no longer accept ships displaying the Israeli flag to dock in the country. These restrictions take immediate effect and signal Malaysia’s strong stance against what it perceives as Israel’s violations of basic humanitarian principles.
This decision by Malaysia is a response to Israeli aggression in Gaza and its blatant violation of human rights and international laws, according to Malaysia. Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that Israel has openly defied fundamental human rights and international laws in Gaza in which over 19,667 Palestinians have been killed, including over 8,000 children, 6,200 women, 310 medics, and 97 journalists, while 52,586 have been injured as a direct result of the Israeli assault, and 355,00 cases of infectious diseases reported in shelters.
It’s worth noting that ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd, also known simply as ZIM, is an Israeli international shipping company and is among the top 20 global shipping companies. Malaysia’s decision to ban Israeli cargo ships in response to Israeli aggression comes amid the recent attacks by Yemen’s Houthis in the Red Sea targeting ships coming to or from Israel as a sign of solidarity with the Palestinians and in response to Israel’s aggression in Gaza.
