Former General el-Sisi, who Overthrew Mohamed Morsi’s Government, Becomes Egypt’s President for the Third Time

Cairo: Former military chief Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who played a pivotal role in toppling the government of elected President Mohamed Morsi, has been elected as the President of Egypt for the third time in the presidential elections held on December 10.

In an election widely criticized as lacking legitimacy, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi claimed victory with an overwhelming 89.6% of the votes during last week’s presidential elections, according to the electoral commission.

Presidential candidate Hazem Omar secured the second position with 4.5% of the total votes, followed by Farid Zahran (4%) and Abdel-Sanad Yamama (1.9%). Notably, leading opposition candidate Ahmed Tantawy withdrew from the race, citing intimidation and violence against his campaign.

The announcement of Sisi’s victory came amidst allegations of a rigged election and concerns about restrictions on opposition groups, media control, and human rights violations.

Critics argue that the Egyptian opposition faces challenges operating effectively due to a crackdown on dissent, media manipulation, and human rights abuses.

It is worth noting that retired General el-Sisi had seized power in July 2013 by overthrowing the democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi. Since then, the ousted president’s party, the Muslim Brotherhood, has faced crackdowns, and during this period, Mohamed Morsi passed away due to a lack of medical facilities in jail.
