Beijing: At least 118 people have lost their lives as buildings collapsed due to earthquakes in northwestern China, prompting rescue workers to initiate relief efforts.
According to the provincial earthquake relief headquarters, cited by the state media agency China Central Television (CCTV), nearly 105 people lost their lives, and hundreds sustained injuries after severe tremors in the Gansu province.
As per CCTV, in the neighboring province of Haidong in the city of Qinghai, 11 people lost their lives, and 100 others were injured.
The Chinese government news agency, Xinhua, reported that the earthquake caused significant damage, including collapsed structures, and people rushed to the streets for safety.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for “every possible effort” to ensure the protection of those who survived and the preservation of their properties, along with search and rescue operations.
The earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.9 according to the United States Geological Survey, occurred near Gansu, bordering with Qinghai, where Haidong is situated.
The epicenter of the earthquake is approximately 100 kilometers (60 miles) southwest of the provincial capital, Lanzhou, in Gansu province. Several aftershocks occurred following the initial quake.
