Islamabad: A joint statement from over a dozen nations calls for immediate and concrete measures to address the alarming increase in extremist settler attacks against Palestinians.
In a unified stance, a coalition of Western countries and the European Union (EU) issued a joint condemnation on Friday against the escalating “violent acts committed by extremist settlers” in the occupied West Bank. The group, comprising Australia, Belgium, Denmark, the EU, France, Ireland, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Canada, Switzerland, Finland, and the United Kingdom, urged Israel to take immediate and tangible steps to address the “record high settler violence” witnessed in the region.
Expressing “grave concern” over the surge in attacks, the statement revealed that, since October, extremist settlers have carried out more than 343 violent incidents, resulting in the deaths of eight Palestinian civilians, injuries to over 83 individuals, and the displacement of 1026 Palestinians from their homes.
“We strongly condemn the violent acts committed by extremist settlers, which are terrorizing Palestinian communities. We reiterate our position that Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are illegal under international law and remind Israel of its obligations under international law, in particular Article 49 of Geneva Convention IV.”
âThis rise in extremist settler violence committed against Palestinians is unacceptable,â said the joint statement. “Israel, as the occupying power, must protect the Palestinian civilian population in the West Bank.” emphasized the statement.
The coalition reiterated its position on the illegality of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank under international law, citing Article 49 of Geneva Convention IV.
Highlighting the unacceptable rise in settler violence, the coalition emphasized Israel’s responsibility as the occupying power to protect the Palestinian civilian population in the West Bank. It further criticized Israel’s failure to prosecute extremist settlers, leading to an environment of “near complete impunity” that has fueled unprecedented levels of violence, undermining security in the West Bank and jeopardizing the prospects for lasting peace.
The coalition stressed the importance of translating words into action, urging Israel to fulfill its commitment made on November 9 to take decisive measures against violent perpetrators.
