Palestinian Death Toll in Israeli Attacks Crosses 18,000, Egypt and Mauritania Invoke Resolution 377A

Gaza: The number of Palestinians martyred during Israeli airstrikes in Gaza has reached crossed 18,000 since October 7.

The recent US veto of a UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, has spurred discussions and a push to leverage an unusual United Nations resolution to halt Israel’s harsh actions in Gaza. Egypt and Mauritania have taken action by invoking Resolution 377A (V) on Monday, urging an emergency meeting of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday.

A special session of the United Nations General Assembly was convened in response to the joint resolution “United for Peace” (Resolution 377) submitted by Egypt and Mauritania. The UN called for “immediate, unrestricted access” to Gaza. The head of the UN, expressing concern over the current situation, has labeled it as “catastrophic.”

Resolution 377A, also known as “Uniting for Peace,” particularly Section A, aims to address situations where the UN fails to exercise its primary responsibility for international peace and security due to disagreements among Security Council members. This resolution empowers the General Assembly to convene a meeting through the secretary-general, enabling recommendations for collective measures, including the use of armed force if necessary. To activate this resolution, at least one member of the UN Security Council or a group of General Assembly members must express support for its convening.

In Lebanon, the United Nations forces have heightened their alert status, warning of an “escalation of the broader conflict” with increased aerial and drone attacks from both Israel and Hezbollah.

It is worth noting that the Palestinian death toll due to Israeli attacks has crossed 18,000, while approximately 50,000 Palestinians have been wounded. Most of the victims of Israeli attacks are women and children.
