COAS Gen. Asim Munir Backs Government’s Decision to Deport Illegal Foreigners

Peshawar: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir, during his recent visit to Peshawar, where he received a comprehensive briefing on the security situation, counter-terrorism operations, repatriation of illegal foreigners and socio-economic developments in the  Newly Merged Districts. During his visit, COAS expressed full support for the interim government’s decision to deport illegal foreigners, stating that their presence was “seriously affecting Pakistan’s security and economy.”

In November, the caretaker government initiated a nationwide campaign to deport illegal foreign nationals, primarily Afghans. Despite criticism from Afghanistan and other quarters, the government remained steadfast, asserting that the move was not targeted at any specific ethnic group. Of the estimated more than four million Afghans in Pakistan, 1.7 million are believed to be undocumented, with thousands returning home from the Torkham and Chaman border crossings.

During an interactive session at the First National Workshop Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (NWKP-1), General Asim stressed that “Illegal foreigners were seriously affecting Pakistan’s security and economy. Decision to repatriate them has been taken by the government in the interest of Pakistan. Illegal foreigners are being repatriated to their countries in a humane and dignified manner as per the established norms.”

COAS General Munir also acknowledged the steadfast support of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in ensuring stability in the province, resulting in progress on socio-economic development projects. He linked the prosperity of Pakistan to the region and highlighted the comprehensive strategy employed to counter forces jeopardizing peace and stability.
