Israel’s Plan to Channel Seawater into Underground Tunnels in Gaza

The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that Israel has assembled a large system of pumps that could be used to divert seawater into underground tunnels beneath the Gaza Strip.

According to media reports around November, the Israeli military completed the setup of at least five pumps approximately one mile north of the Al-Shati refugee camp. These pumps have the capacity to transfer thousands of cubic meters of water per hour, potentially leading to flooding in the tunnels within weeks.

Details suggest that it is unclear whether Israel will consider using the pumps before the release of the Israeli captives. Hamas has previously claimed to have hidden prisoners in “safe locations and tunnels.”

When asked about it, a U.S. official stated that rendering the tunnels useless for Israel makes sense, and the country is exploring various methods to achieve this. The Israeli Ministry of Defense has not immediately responded to requests for comment.

The Wall Street Journal mentioned that Israel first informed the United States about this option last month, stating that authorities were unaware of how close Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government was to implementing the plan.

According to officials, Israel has not made a definitive decision to proceed or reject the plan.
