Paris: Muslim students wearing abayas in France have gotten into new problems due to controversial government decisions, causing concern for the Muslim community residing there.
According to news agencies, the new academic year has started in France, however right from the beginning, due to the controversial decision to ban abayas, Muslim students have fallen into a new crisis. The French government announced a week ago that it is imposing a ban on abayas in schools. Before this, Muslim students and teachers were allowed to wear the abayas.
The abaya ban came into effect from the start of the new academic year today. Special officers were appointed to enforce this decision. Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne also visited schools. In a media interview, she said that everything went fine today. No unpleasant incident took place. We remained vigilant all day and explained the ban to the students.
The French prime minister further said that some girls had arrived wearing abaya, some of whom agreed to take it off, while others thought it better to go back home, but we will talk to them and make them understand. The education minister said officials have identified 513 schools that could be affected by the abaya ban at the start of the academic year. These are schools where Muslim students also study.
French President Emmanuel Macron has lauded and supported this new move by the government to ban wearing abayas in schools.
