Washington: A report by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has revealed that thousands of mosques and churches have been targeted by Hindu extremists over the past 76 years.
According to the private TV report, the U.S. Commission’s report further reveals that attacks are systematically carried out against Muslims and other minorities in India under Hindu extremism.
According to the report, in the 76 years since 1947, 50,000 mosques, over 20,000 churches, and places of worship of other minorities have fallen prey to the hatred and bigotry of Hindu extremists.
Hindu extremist groups such as Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, and RSS are actively involved in attacks on minority places of worship in India, under the government’s tacit approval. In the Modi government, laws related to issues like “Halal Jihad,” cow protection, bulldozer policy, citizenship, and hijab bans are being used against Muslims while anti-conversion laws are used against Hindus and Buddhists.
In December 1992, Hindu extremists demolished the centuries-old historic Babri Masjid in Ayodhya and thousands of Muslims were killed in attacks by Hindus. Claims over dozens of places of worship including Shahi Eidgah Mosque, Shamsi Mosque, and Gyanvapi Mosque are pending in courts.
In 2017, Hindu extremists also claimed the Taj Mahal, included among the wonders of the modern world, to be a Shiv temple. In 1984, the Indian army carried out an assault with tanks and artillery on the holiest Sikh shrine Golden Temple in Amritsar, after which in attacks targeting the Sikh communities, several Sikhs were killed.
Over 400 churches have been set on fire in the recent communal violence in Manipur while in 2008, Hindu extremists burned down 600 Christian villages and 400 churches. According to Arab media, renaming places with Hindu names, bulldozer policy, and converting mosques into temples are BJP’s attempts to rewrite India’s history.
