Karachi: The city of Quaid has become a stronghold of criminals. Dacoits, armed with audacity, are busy looting citizens, while murder during street crimes has become a game for the dacoits.
According to the statistics department of the provincial government, 67.5% of the crimes reported in Sindh are only in the provincial capital Karachi. During the past 6 years, the number of car thefts and robberies in Karachi has risen from 3,858 to a staggering 30,580.
According to a report for the year 2022, there has been an unusual increase in crimes in Sindh over the past 2 years. In 2020, the total number of crimes in the province was recorded at 99,316, out of which 60,331 were reported in Karachi. In 2021, the total number of crimes committed in the province reached 1,19,545, with 81,164 reported in Karachi.
During the years 2020 to 2021, a decrease in crimes was observed in Hyderabad, Larkana, Mirpurkhas, and Shaheed Benazirabad divisions. Mirpurkhas division was declared the safest city in Sindh, where 3,569 crimes were reported in 2020 and 3,283 in 2021.
In 2016, Karachi reported a total of 36,670 crimes, which increased by 121% by 2021, reaching 81,164. Prominent increases in crimes in Karachi, along with car thefts and robberies, included dacoities, kidnappings, child abductions, suicides, and incidents of sexual assault during these 6 years.
In 2021, there were 5,563 dacoities, 1,841 thefts, 2,883 abductions, 75 suicides, and attempted suicide cases reported in Karachi. Additionally, 493 individuals were murdered, 601 cases of murder were reported, and 185 cases of sexual assault were registered. There were 5,797 cases filed for violation of arms ordinance.
