India Revokes Visas issued to Afghan Citizens: Future of Students Bleak

New Delhi: Following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, the Indian government has revoked all visas issued to Afghan citizens, including a significant number of visas held by Afghan students. This has resulted in a bleak future for Afghan students in India.

The denial of visas by India has made it impossible for Afghan students to take online exams as an alternative. More than 2,500 Afghan students who were studying in Indian universities are now stranded in Afghanistan due to visa issues.

India’s supposed unwavering support for Afghan students has proven to be nothing more than a façade. When Afghan students protested the denial of visas, Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar referred to security concerns, lack of trust, and visa system performance. It is worth noting that many Afghan students were previously provided scholarships by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, but their entry has been revoked due to visa denials.

Universities have begun cancelling admissions of students who were unable to return to campus and attend classes due to the lack of visas.

Many student leaders in India have been raising their issues with relevant authorities in Afghan and Indian embassies, but their efforts have not yielded any positive results. Women students have been affected the most in these circumstances as they cannot enroll in any university in Kabul or apply to foreign universities for new admissions.
