LAHORE: People across Pakistan are suffering from extreme heatwaves and prolonged electricity outages, enduring the torment of unbearable conditions. The country has reached a power shortage of 6,598 megawatts.
According to Power Division sources, load shedding is being carried out for 8 to 10 hours nationwide. The total electricity generation is 20,402 megawatts, while the demand for electricity is 27,000 megawatts.
As per the Power Division, hydropower production is 6,200 megawatts, with government thermal power plants producing 563 megawatts of electricity. Private sector powerhouses contribute 9,000 megawatts of electricity.
The power division reports that electricity generation from wind power plants is 1,245 megawatts, solar powerhouses produce 100 megawatts, biomass contributes 130 megawatts, and nuclear power plants generate 3,164 megawatts. Some areas are facing power outages of more than 12 hours due to system overload and tripping.
As the load on the system increased, overloaded distribution transformers failed. The system overload resulted in prolonged power outages in various areas throughout the night. LESCO’s electricity demand has exceeded 5,500 megawatts, and incidents of transformer fires have increased due to the rising load. Due to staff shortages, timely resolution of complaints has become impossible.
According to sources, due to severe heat and prolonged load shedding, children, elderly people, women, and sick individuals in Lahore are suffering immensely. Various areas are also facing a scarcity of water due to prolonged electricity outages.
In different areas, such as Muzang, Kacha Jail Road, Ameer Town, Harbanspura, Shahdrah Town, and Imamia Colony, Lahore, electricity remained off for up to 24 hours, leaving the residents in severe distress due to the intense heat and power cuts.
