WASHINGTON: The United States and Cuba are about to enter a new era of bilateral diplomatic relations and officially seal it on Wednesday marking a new milestone in history.
Re-opening of embassies would be the final step required to get into a full diplomatic swing with Cuba after the Cuban Revolution in 1950s. President Obama and Raul Castro’s meeting during a summit in Panama this April was the first state head level meeting between United States and Cuba in over 50 years.
The United States officially removed Cuba from its list of state sponsors of terror earlier in June, eliminating a remaining stumbling block in the diplomatic renewal. Travelling restrictions on US citizens were lifted off around six months ago however, there are some restrictions still applicable likely to be lifted once the embassies re-open.
In Havana, the American embassy will likely occupy the same building where the Interests Section currently operates, White House aides have said. That’s the same structure, situated on the Havana waterfront, which housed the American embassy prior to the severing of diplomatic ties after the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s.
Restoring diplomatic ties with Cuba is central to Obama administration’s foreign policy near the end of his presidency. Obama has long argued that U.S embargo on the Communist nation has been ineffective. Rumors of business ties to restore more rapidly than expected between Cuba and United States are already circulating as more and more high level C.E.Os and Diplomats visit Cuba each week.
