Nepal Earthquake: Google, Facebook launch person finder service to locate survivors

WASHINGTON: Search engine giant Google and social website Facebook has introduced a new feature for its users to find their family survivors in Nepal Earthquake.

One of the most daunting tasks in the aftermath of an earthquake is to track and rescue survivors. Both Facebook and Google have come up with their tools to help relatives and friends find survivors after yesterday’s earthquake with its epicentre in Nepal.

Google yesterday launched its Person Finder – a crowd sourcing initiative where anyone can request information on missing persons and anyone working with the relief efforts can log in details of rescued people.

The Google page is dedicated to the Nepal earthquake and one can search for a person by entering the name or even part of the name.

Users can also search or find out the latest updates by sending an SMS in India and the US by texting “search <name>” to +91-9773300000 in India or+1-650-800-3978 in the US.

Facebook Safety Check on the other hand enables users to track those from the affected areas provided they are in your friends list. If you happen to be a survivor and can get access to Facebook you could well put up status that you are safe.
