First shipment of LNG to arrive today from Qatar

ISLAMABAD: The first shipment of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from Qatar will arrive today and it will link with the natural gas system on March 31.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, while reporting to National Assembly on Wednesday, claimed that this summer there will be comparatively less load shading in the country.

Mr. Khaqan, however, refused to disclose that what government would pay Qatar for LNG, but termed the price of project as “best price in Asia”.

He said although the first shipment is about to reach on 26 March but the rats of LNG are still being negotiable between the Qatar Gas and Pakistan State Oil (PSO).

He further added that as soon as the rates will be decided it will not only shear on the parliamentary forum but also will presented in front of Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the federal cabinet for its approval.

While notifying the benefits of the project to the country, Petroleum Minister told that it will add 10% more power to the existing level of power generation and will provide almost $300 million saving to power generation companies.

Taking the credits of the project Mr. Khakan said that previous government of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was failed to sign the LNG project with Qatar but the government know overcome with all the hurdles. He again ensured the house “the price of the imported LNG will be the best in Asia”.

The first shipment will arrive on the Qasim Port, containing the 60,000 tonnes of LNG.
