ISLAMABAD: Supreme Cour of Pakistan, while conducting hearing of the cases regarding non-holding of the local bodies’ elections in the three provinces, has ordered the governments of Sindh and Punjab that all the steps should be completed in a month for the local bodies elections and the law regarding giving the right of conducting local bodies elections in the cantonment boards should be issued in a week.
Three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk and comprising Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Musheer Alam conducted hearing of the case here on Thursday.
The court said that the action will be initiated against the authorized authority if the law was not issued in a week.
The court directed the election commission to give the final date on the next hearing for holding the local bodies’ polls in the Punjab and the Sindh province.
The counsel of election commission, Akram Sheikh contended that the government of the Punjab has given incomplete details and the steps taken by the Sindh government are also insufficient.
The court expressed dissatisfaction on the reports presented by both the provinces. Chief Justice said that so far the phase of making a law could not be completed.
Akram Sheikh said that the provincial governments do not want the local bodies’ elections, saying that both the governments will not be ready to hold local bodies’ elections until the court directly orders both the governments.
Justice Gulzar Ahmed said that Sindh government absolutely does not want that local bodies’ elections should be held in the province.
Additional advocate general, Razzaq A Mirza informed the court his government has had meetings with the election commission.
Chief Justice said that the government gets active two days before the hearing of the case and then again silence prevails, saying that the meetings are useless if the meetings end without producing solid results.
Akram Sheikh informed that the court that the court should bind the government of Sindh and Punjab to compete their work and the election commission will issue the elections schedule in a week.
Chief Justice said that cantonment board has so far not bothered to make law.
Deputy attorney general Sajid Ilyas Bhatti said that the draft of the law has been prepared and views have been exchanged with the election commission and the authorized authority has to approve the draft. Later on, while issuing the orders, the court adjourned hearing of the case till February 12.
