Benazir murder, 76 terrorism cases declared ‘fit’ for trial in military courts

ISLAMABAD: Punjab government has recommended at least 77 terrorism cases including renowned politician Benazir Bhutto murder case for trial in military courts, reports said.

At least 77 cases have been forwarded to the interior ministry with recommendations to start trial in special courts led by military officials which was recently approved following 21st constitutional amendment in Pakistan, local media reported on Wednesday.

Recent development was first-ever and prominent one in its kind, as a high-profile murder case of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) ex-chairperson Benazir Bhutto (Late) was declared ‘fit’ for trial in military courts.

Twice Prime Minister and PPP ex-chairperson Benazir Bhutto was assassinated followed by gun shots and suicide bomb explosion at Liaquat National Bagh in Rawalpindi, Pakistan on 27 December 2007 during election campaigning of January 2008.

The cases were sent to the interior minister to scrutinise the details which later would be forwarded to apex committee to issue SOPs within three days to make it ready to be heard in the military-run courts, Express News said. The forwarded cases also include six different terrorism cases which were sent by the Islamabad administration.

According to reports, the military courts will be established in next 10 days in the country while two courts will be established in Chaklala Garrison situated in Rawalpindi.
