DHAKA: An award-winning British journalist, David Bergman, declared ‘guilty of contempt of court’ for questioning the official death toll of the country’s 1971 independence war.
The journalist, who wrote a blog and two other articles questioning the three million death toll in the country’s 1971 independence war, convicted of ‘hurting the feelings of the Bangladeshi nation’ by the controversial International War Crimes Tribunal.
The verdict was delivered by presiding judge Obaidul Hassan here on Tuesday that the free speeches can only be exercised in good faith and public interest.
Judge Hassan added that the Brit journalist neither exhibited his good faith nor highlighted an issue of public interest.
The court ordered Bergman to pay a 5,000 taka ($65) fine or go for one-week imprisonment.
David Bergman’s reporting on its work also faced special probe directives by the International Crimes Tribunal which already declared several top opposition leaders guilty of mass murder.
