A Sparks Middle School math teacher who was killed Monday while trying to stop a shooter was being remembered as a hero, report says.
Police said Michael Landsberry, a Marine veteran who just celebrated his wedding anniversary on Oct. 18, tried to intervene before a seventh-grader fired a gun he had brought to school. Landsberry and the student both died in the incident. Two other students were critically injured.
Law enforcement officials who spoke at an 11 a.m. press conference about the incident said Landsberry acted heroically, although all the details of his actions were not yet completely known.
“In my estimation he was a hero,” Reno Deputy Police Chief Tom Robinson said of Landsberry. “We do know he was trying to intervene.”
The shooter entered the school at about 7:16 a.m. He was described by police as a student. Police said they were not clear if he took his own life, although law enforcement officials said they fired no shots during their response.
One of the two injured students went through surgery at Renown Medical Center, and the other was said to be doing OK, police said.
