KARACHI: As the operation against criminals spreads in Karachi, law enforcement agencies have revealed scientific use of Social Networking Apps for execution of criminal activities.
“Outlaws have been successfully using WhatsUp, Skype, Viber and Tango like apps for their communication,” Sindh police told the authorities.
Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon has confirmed that these apps would be requested to be banned for a period of three months.
“Pakistan Telecommunication Authority will be requested to ban these apps as terrorists are using it as a safe communicational tool,” he said in a press briefing.
These apps are widely used in urban as well rural areas of the southern province of Sindh, special correspondent of The News Tribe has reported. As the boom of smartphones balloon, the number of internet and apps usage has gone skyrocketing in these areas.
The police has requested in written to the authorities to ban, at least temporarily, these apps for stopping communication of terrorists and criminals.
Sindh government in collaboration with Federal governments is carrying out targeted operations in the port city for a month or so. Hundreds of criminals, both non political and political, have been arrested so far in these raids.
Earlier, reports have emerged that political and criminals organizations have asked their activists to use Smartphone instead of tradition communication ways for communication.
About 40 million Pakistanis out of total 180 millions are using internet, while 120 millions citizens have mobile phone in Pakistan.
According to the available data, more than 1.5 million Pakistanis using internet on mobile phones including Smartphones where these communicational apps are considered as hotcake.
“Technically the ban is possible but practically it can’t be helpful because there are lot of other apps, which work like mentioned apps” TheNewsTrbe’s technology correspondent added.
