KARACHI: After constant extortion threats in metropolitan city, more or less 5000 doctors have decided to go away from home.
According to the sources, recently 10 doctors have resigned from their posts due to due to extortion threats. The Doctors association claims that they got calls for extortion from various political parties of Karachi.
The doctors claim that the extortionists Rs. 100-150 million are being demanded on monthly basis. The government has failed to provide security to the medical personnel. Since the last 5 years, they are being constantly targeted if they fail to comply with the demands of the extortionists. Since the last two years, more or less 5000 doctors have gone abroad due to unsatisfactory conditions of security.
According to the sources, 7 to 10 extortion groups have been involved under the support of political parties and police.
Finance secretary of Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) said that no one is safe including the doctors. If this trend continues, the citizens will be affected. Pakistan Islamic Medical Association Karachi’s Dr. Zeeshan Ansari said that only 1 out of 1000 doctors informed police about extortion threats.
